The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
